Timber wall replacement
Timber retaining walls are Sydney's most numerous and shortest-lived. Sleepers rot from the buried face outward, posts hinge at ground level, and the wall folds gradually until one wet week finishes it. Replacement is the norm rather than repair once decay is structural, and the rebuild is the opportunity to fix the drainage and embedment shortcuts that killed the original.

Timing
When it's needed
Springy or visibly rotten sleepers, posts leaning as a group, soil bleeding through gaps after rain, or a wall already partially collapsed. Where the wall supports a driveway, structure or neighbour's land, replacement moves from garden maintenance to a structural project with engineering and possible approval requirements.
A bulging or freshly moved retaining wall can collapse without further warning, particularly during or after heavy rain. Keep children, vehicles and work activity away from both the base and the retained edge, do not excavate at the toe, and get a structural assessment before anyone works close to it.
